Hibiscus

Hibiscus Interview by Kirstee Griffiths

Where did you come up with the name Hibiscus? I have a love for all things tropical. In my youth I spent some years living in such bliss, and used to pick a hibiscus and pop it in my hair every morning before work. It’s my way of bring the Whitsunday’s to Christchurch!

What are five words that describe your work? The first one would have to be unique. Fabric decoupage is still fairly new to New Zealand, so many people do a double take and need to touch the glossy surface just to check it’s real! Second up, I have to say it’s total funk! I bring the pizazz into normal, everyday pieces of furniture, not only giving them a second or third life, but also bring them ‘back’ to life...I’d also describe my work as ‘happy’. Not only does it make me just that creating it, but the fabric I use tends to scream happy - like the bold yellow polka dot’s I’m covering on and old school chair today.Lastly, I’d go with retro and vintage. I love scouring op shops and finding treasures of yesteryear and re loving them with a modern twist.

What was your favourite toy as a child? And now? I’m not sure I had a favourite growing up. I did have a rather large collection of Barbie's which I have now passed on to my children.Vintage hand knitted gowns adorn them, so for this reason, and my passion for reuse, recycle, I think they would have to rate top of my list.

What is making you happy right now? Lentils! I have discovered a new guru Wonder Woman and home cook, Eleanor  Ozich, and have been devouring my way through her winter edition of Petite Kitchen.Lentils feature at least once a week on our family menu.

What did you dream about last night? A gigantic bed. It comes with the territory of frequently having a wriggly two year old nap with you!

What is something that can always make you feel better? A great big hug and a massage. never underestimate the power of touch.

Do you do anything crazy to inspire creativity? Do losing days on Pinterest  and hours on overseas fabric websites count?!!

Were you popular in High School? Not particularly. There was a clear segregation in our 7th form common room. The cool kid’s on one side and the more studious types on the other. I was one of about 10 girls who sat in a line between the two, having friends on both sides. I’ve got to say I’ve never been one for boxes.

What is your favourite quote? The grass is always greener where you water it...

What do you hope to be remembered for? I think, just being me.My love, creativity and faith in myself to barrage on through whatever stands in my path.
