Where did you come up with the name The Queen Stitch?
I wanted a snappy name that reflected my craft of choice without heading down the cutsey path littered with icky puns.
I’ve always been a huge fan of David Bowie and of the films of Wes Anderson. Bowie’s song Queen Bitch featured in the film The Life Aquatic so I thought a play on the song title was a nice tribute to two of my key influences whilst still being a distinctive name in it’s own right. I mean, I am the Queen of my strange little Kingdom, after all!
What are five words to describe your work?
Pop Culture. Eccentric. Geek fuelled. Unique.
What was your favourite toy as a child? And now?
As a kid it was my Sindy dolls (Sindy was was shorter and frumpier English version of Barbie). I was a pretty antisocial child so would shut myself away and immerse myself in some pretty melodramatic and scandal filled storylines that would span weeks. I was also pretty into crafting bespoke (if not slightly greasy) furniture for my dolls out of empty margarine tubs.
These days I’m completely besotted with Spotify and being able to wirelessly stream music through devices. It’s the ultimate toy for music fans and has completely changed the way I listen to and discover music. Yes, I also mourn the loss of the traditional record or CD collection, but to have almost every album ever made right at your fingertips constantly blows me away. I could preach for hours, but will just say it’s the future, and the more people that embrace it as a social platform for sharing, the better for us all!
What is making you happy right now?
Well right this very moment, I’m doing three of my favourite things:
- Writing
- Sipping a gin and tonic
- Listening to the new Arctic Monkeys song for the 5000th time (secretly hoping that if I play it enough times Alex Turner will materialize out of the speakers and declare his undying love).
I’m becoming increasingly aware that true happiness is all about appreciating the little things and just living in the moment, so on that basis, life doesn't really get much better than it is right now!
What did you dream about last night?
I can’t remember last night’s dream, but a few days ago I had this amazing dream where I was hanging out with Nick Cave in his kitchen. We had a cup of tea and perched on the counter top complaining to each other about the politics of the modern day Glastonbury festival. Nick’s kitchen was very large and sunny with expansive polished concrete counter tops and eco ply lining the walls. It was quite beautiful.
I said to him,“Hey Nick, I really love what you’ve done with your kitchen and your environmentally conscious decision to use a sustainable material on these walls. I’d love to bake you something in it one day.” To which he agreed.
What is something that always makes you feel better?
My Wheaten Terrier, Chewie. He’s always so loyal and happy to see me. He never gets grumpy no matter how hard I hug him. He’s the best flat mate a girl could ask for!
Do you do anything crazy to inspire creativity?
Not really. But i guess we all have different perceptions of what crazy is. I’ll just say that it usually involves a gin and/or tea and some baggy pajama pants. I’ll let your imagination do the rest as I’m sure it’s far more exciting than the reality!
Were you popular in high school?
I don’t THINK I was unpopular, but I certainly wasn’t one of the cool girls either. I went to Avonside Girls and my group of friends and I were the obnoxious drama crowd. I guess in modern terms, we were the Glee club (*groans*). We would usually be seen performing in assembly doing some weird and hurriedly assembled skit to promote science week or competing in Theatresports tournaments.
Yeah, the ever endearing combination of geeky AND loud. I guess it was all character building, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Plus, I’m still best friends with the group, so that’s pretty swell.
What is your favourite quote?
"Nothing is important, so people, realising that, should get on with their lives, go mad, take their clothes off, jump in the canal, jump into one of those supermarket trolleys, race around the supermarket and steal Mars bars and, y'know, kiss kittens and sit on the back of bread vans." - Morrissey
What do you hope to be remembered for?
Big hair. Great taste in music. Gave good hugs. Made a mean cup of tea.
