Sailor Spy

Sailor Spy is a women’s wear label conceived and made by Nin McKay’s hands. Nin works from a light filled studio, Orange Tree Cottage hidden behind a Secret Garden-esque hedge on Bealey Ave. Visit www.sailorspy.co.nz for more information, online shop and studio open hours.

Where did you come up with the name 'Sailor Spy'? Sailor Spy is a nod to my husband’s former role as a merchant seaman and to my given name. I am named for a movie, whose leading lady is a spy.

What are five words that describe your work? Feminine, timeless, versatile, beautiful, bespoke

What was your favourite toy as a child? And now? I love books and my bicycle – then and now, both have the ability to take me away on adventures.

What is making you happy right now? Hellebores in my garden; an earlier sunrise and a later sunset.

What did you dream about last night? I can’t talk about that!

What is something that can always make you feel better? The beach is my happy place – sand in my toes, spray on my face, and the sound of the surge…..even thinking about it makes me happy.

Do you do anything crazy to inspire creativity? I’m not sure it’s crazy, but I do find myself crawling along on the ground or climbing trees to get the perfect photo or leaf or piece of discarded ephemera, must to the amusement of passers-by.

I surround myself with risk takers and vibrant creative types and ignore trends as much as possible.

Were you popular in High School? More “Art Geek” than “Prom Queen”

What is your favourite quote? “You are never given a wish without being given the power to make it true.  You may have to work for it however.”  Richard Bach, Illusions

What do you hope to be remembered for? I would love to have made lots of women’s favourite clothes y’know the item you pull out of the wardrobe because it’s well made, fits well and always makes you look good.  I don’t need to be personally remembered, but I would like my work to have a small but positively influence in others’ daily lives – that would be cool!
